English Teaching

Before coming to Canada, my tutoring team was providing free English lessons to local Vietnamese children aged 7-11 whose backgrounds were not privileged. Out of the 16 students of our class, 4 of them could not continue their primary-level education due to poverty, so their knowledge of math and Vietnamese were behind and English lessons were beyond their reach. Therefore, as tutors, we were not only teaching English but also reinforcing math concepts and Vietnamese. Despite the lack of access to education, the kids were very smart - street smart - and they behaved quite mature for their age. Teaching the children was both fulfilling and fun, especially when they could recall the English phrases I taught. Sometimes we organized board games or holiday events and the kids loved it.

Highlights

  • The students were able to conversate in basic English and write basic sentences structure by the end of the school year (Level A2 in CEFR).

  • I received the HOPE Award 2018 from Volunteer House Vietnam for dedication to teaching and volunteering - selected of 1 among 3000 volunteers.
